Job Description

Cradlefin Consultants are recruiting for a Deputy Director for Companies and Commercial Projects, who will be at the heart of the Department’s work to improve health and social care outcomes with responsibility for leading our support for, and assurance of, some of our most complex financial and commercial matters.

The applicant we are looking for will have responsibility for leading our support for companies that are vital to the delivery of health and social care across the country, as well as advising on crucial financial and commercial matters that are often both sensitive and complex. As such, this role is at the heart of the Department’s work to improve health and social care outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Co-leading a team of c.15 people in a way that is inclusive, inspiring and tailored to a team based in locations across the country. Leadership is joint with another deputy director who has a commercial law background, with each of you having your own set portfolio.
  2. Leading specialist support to the Department-owned companies – including NHS Property Services and Community Health Partnerships – to successfully deliver against their performance targets and budgets, resolve issues that arise (e.g. commercial disputes) and contribute positively to the wider strategic objectives and systems they operate within.
  3. Advising on complex commercial projects, such as reviewing the PPE contracts signed during the Covid-19 response and advising on the sale of a publicly owned site for wider Life Sciences sector re-generation.
  4. Contributing to the running of the overall Directorate and wider Finance Group, as a key member of the senior leadership team and through the way you engage with staff on a day to day basis.

Person specification

  • Outstanding leadership skills, with the ability to articulate an inspiring vision, and engage and motivate people to deliver in line with business objectives.
  • Proven ability to lead a team working at pace, managing multiple priorities and deadlines, in a way that protects an inclusive culture and your core values. Linked to this is an ability to work effectively in a complex and high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to lead and communicate with colleagues from non-technical backgrounds.
  • Experience of advising senior leaders or ministers on highly complex financial and/or commercial issues, with high quality communication skills and sound political judgement.
  • Ability to deliver through highly effective working relationships with key stakeholders in both central Government (e.g. the Cabinet Office) and executive level stakeholders outside Whitehall.

Qualifications

A relevant financial qualification or experience in finance, commercial finance or company management is essential, but we do not expect you to have experience across all of these areas.
